Idiopathic Stabbing Headache
Also known as “ice-pick headaches,” these are a sharp, stabbing, pinpoint pain on the head that lasts for seconds to minutes. This can occur anywhere on the head and it is not uncommon for it to be on either side of the head.
Sometimes people will have a “volley” of stabs, which is a series of short stabs grouped together. Each stab is typically seconds in duration and can occur infrequently or multiple times per day. These can occur anywhere on the head – it does not have to always be the exact same spot or even the same side of the head (oftentimes, it isn’t). This is more common in people with a diagnosis of migraine headache. So some people will have a diagnosis of BOTH migraine headache and primary stabbing headache.
