IV Vyepti® Infusions for the Prevention of Migraine
An FDA approved IV infusion therapy done every 12 weeks on an ongoing basis to prevent episodic and chronic migraine.
Vyepti® is an IV infusion done in our office (or at a designated infusion center) every 12 weeks for the preventative treatment of both episodic and chronic migraine. This comes in two doses, 100 mg or 300 mg, and is done on an ongoing basis every 12 weeks to maintain benefit. Since this is done via IV infusion, it is 100% bioavailable by the end of the infusion, and some people start to feel improvement in their migraines the same day. There are little-to-no side effects with this therapy, with the most common side effect being runny/stuffy nose during the infusion in about 2% of patients.
The infusion itself takes 30 minutes, and you are then monitored with IV fluids for 30 minutes before being discharged. We do not require a driver for this treatment, as it generally does not have any side effects. You would not have any restrictions before or after receiving the IV Vyepti® treatment.
This therapy does require approval with your health insurance because it is a very expensive treatment option (especially at the 300 mg dose). Prior approval can be difficult depending on your medical history and prior therapies previously attempted. Most insurance companies require prior trials of multiple, different preventative agents before Vyepti® would be considered/approved. Acute therapies do not “count” towards this insurance requirement.
