The Phoenix Headache Institute (PHI) was established in July of 2018 by co-founders Eric Eross, D.O. and Stuart Hetrick, D.O. Medical director Dr. Eross has utilized his innovative approaches to seamlessly integrate patient care, research, and education within the private-practice medical sector. Such founding tenants, most noticeably associated with Mayo Clinic (where Dr. Eross did his headache medicine fellowship), have traditionally only been reserved for “major” medical centers and universities.
The name Phoenix Headache Institute was chosen, not necessarily because of its geographic location (its always been in Scottsdale, AZ), but rather because of what the “phoenix” symbolizes… a renaissance, a rebirth, an amazing transformation. This upward ascension is captured within our logo as a phoenix rises from “within oneself” to new heights not previously imagined. The two heads represent where you have been (or currently are), and more importantly, your chosen destiny…the “new” you. Finally, within the logo is a sun with emanating rays which is reminiscent of the flag of Arizona and symbolizing our origins in “The Valley of the Sun”.
The mission of PHI is to substantially improve the quality of our patients’ lives through unparalleled expertise in headache medicine, patient education, compassionate care, and application of effective and well tolerated therapies.
Such founding principles have served PHI well. Grounded in humble beginnings, PHI moved to its current location in January of 2023 and has now “risen” to become one of the Southwest’s premier centers for headache medicine. This year alone, some 10,000 patients will pass through its doors.
This center was built “from the ground up” with one person in mind…you! Within these walls you will find a headache friendly atmosphere consisting of low and indirect lighting, simple visual design patterns, sound dampening features, low “commotion” corridors, scent free zones and tools to facilitate patient education. Structurally, it is comprised of three clinics all-in-one. This includes a traditional clinic for “in person” visits and procedures, an infusion center to administer vital intravenous therapies and a “virtual clinic” conveniently serving expertise from a distance. More important than any physical structure, is the PHI team. It is comprised of dedicated individuals who sincerely care about you and your individual journey/transformation. At PHI, we are truly grateful for the opportunity to provide medical care by a team that is compassionate, honest, respectful, knowledgeable, hard-working and experts in their field.
Some will say individuals solely determine whether they become the phoenix or remain the ash; well, they probably never had debilitating headaches. More commonly, to live our best lives, we need a little help along the way. We are the Phoenix Headache Institute, and we are here to lend that helping hand.
